Never Have So Few...

I'm dying here.

It has been over a month since I have touched a horse.  I don't think I have gone this long without bugging my equine friends in 15 years or so.

We try to winter our ponies someplace else.  Not in our home corral.  They are mustangs, and it really improves their attitudes to run free, eat grass and  not worry about the people for between two and five months.  The longer, the better as far as they are concerned.

We sent them away to an 80 acre mountain side last December 1st or so.  But then about a month ago, they had their "Forced Relocation".

The property they are on now is a 10 acre (or so) plot of property behind the property owner' s home.  We can just see our horses and the mares they are with from the highway.  Just.  But no touching.  Or giving of treats.  Or nuthin.  The property they are now on was supposed to be sort of a temporary stop-over, but all of the the fencing is down on the long term pasture, so we can't move them there.

I miss our horses.
I think my saddle is lonely.

  1. Did you at least see them from a distance today? Sucks you couldn't get closer and get hands on :(

  2. I hear you. I used to over-winter my horses (for years) in our sixty acre pasture in the foothills--three hours away from here. My neighbor up there kept an eye on them, and I thought all the freedom and grass was good for them. But I only saw them once or twice a month. It just killed me. I missed them and I worried about them endlessly--especially when it stormed (they aren't mustangs, and Gunner is kind of a shivery lily of a horse). When someone else put a group of horses across the fence from mine, that was it. I couldn't handle the worry any more. So now they are here in the winter--and when it is muddy (like it is now) I think I should have hauled them to the pasture. (The grass is always greener, you know...) But I can keep an eye on them here and blanket them when they shiver and feed them well. And pet them.., and just see them. Anyway, I really do understand how you feel. It's torture.

    1. We truly had forgotten how difficult it was to not have the horses within reach. Literally, the last time was when my now 13 yo mare was only 18 months old - and then she came home with strangles!

  3. I feel for you. I haven't touched a horse for over a year and I even have cried because I miss my Smoky. I am such a boob. I find myself petting my buffalo hide covered rocker. Should I seek a therapist?

I had to turn verification back on. Ten "spams" an hour is making me crazy...
