Zoo Day

It was April 1st this week and even though we are still getting lots of snow (five inches last night), it seemed like we should do something 'spring-like'.  When Nebalee mentioned taking some of the younger kids to the zoo for Spring Break, we sort of invited ourselves along.   It had been years since Bill and I had been to the Denver Zoo and it is always a favorite.... with lots of changes since our last trip.

There are new 'attractions' at the entrance, like these metal statues that capture the heart and get you prepared for what's ahead.  We saw the real items later in the afternoon.
And how much cuter can warthogs get?
Here's the real item - not exactly a Disney scene, this one.
We finally got everyone gathered together - inside - the gates and started off.
One of the little ones with us was in a body cast and wheel chair; two weeks ago she had a hip restructured and has to be in a cast for 12 weeks.  Never a sound of complaint out of her; what a trooper!

The first exhibit we came to were a couple of hornbills - displaying signs of spring courtship.

In the same exhibit, watching very carefully, these deer-type critters seem almost mesmerized.  The one in the back is one of the zoo's new babies.
And of course, strolling the fence next door...were these two cheetahs.   ???
By this time it is mid-morning and Papa Bill 'needs a rest, but his feet are too short to reach the ground'.  Asset is not buying his story, but is willing to entertain him on the bench.
What's a good zoo without a monkey house ....

....which was remodeled just three years after our lodge was built...and has lots of monkeys.
While us older ones were being entertained by these guys, the younger ones found that a 'hands on' experience was much more exciting.  Really - a goose?

Just shows you where the priorities are!  Fortunately for them, there was a great surprise in store.  One of the friends with us has a relative who works in the bird section of the zoo.  We met her just before lunch and she introduced us to her favorite buddy, Imok.
This flamingo was hand raised and just LOVES any human attention she can get, so of course most wanted their chance to snuggle with her.
Nebelle, giggling because it tickles to have a bird poke its beak into your armpit.
The younger kids weren't in the least intimidated by this brightly colored bird on stilts, in fact....
I was beginning to think we would have to leave the youngest there.  He kept going back for more snuggles.  At least he and the bird matched.
Neither was the bird intimidated by the wheel chair; she brought lots of smiles this day.

Even Papa Bill had to get in on the act!

It was very gracious of this lady to spend so much time with us and the kids, explaining how the birds eat, answering all their questions, letting us invade her workspace and giving the birds extra treats to show the kids.

When the other flamingos realized treats were involved, they wanted to come see, too.
This is what 73 flamingos look like inside their winter quarters.  They are scheduled to be put back outside in a couple of weeks, when the temperatures are a little more moderate.
It's a little difficult following a class act like that, so we opted for lunch, and found a nice picnic table outside the pachyderm pavilion.  We finished our picnic just in time to see the afternoon elephant demo.  Meet Dolly, the audience loving elephant.  Her favorite trick seems to be holding her trunk in her mouth.

That's the end of a 'runway' she is standing on and she hogged it all to herself for the entire show.  Apparently, the other elephants don't trust her to not throw them into the water - and it's cold right now.

Across from the elephants were a couple Somali Wild Asses.  They spent a lot of time chasing each other around their huge enclosure.  They made me think of a cross between a long-ears and a zebra.
We saw this strange site; a zoo keeping snuggling with a rhino.  Now that's a face only a true animal lover could like.  It's good to see that there seems to be real fondness between the animals and their caretakers here at the Denver Zoo.
We got to see the youngest member out on exhibit; an Okapi.  It looks like a baby zebra that got its front end dipped in dark ink.
He even had an official birth announcement.  He's barely two months old.
Finally, the live giraffes; much more elegant than the ones at the entrance.
The littlest member of our group was getting tired by now, so Kyzer took over the chair controls.  All the kids were so good the whole time.

We had promised Asset that we would look for turtles, so we headed for the Tropical exhibit and made a quick run through.  The little rays caused some fascination; they put on a show while the kids watched.
Then it was time to head for home.  Bill and I made a fast run into the 'cat house'.  These Servels curled up in their food dish looked just like we were beginning to feel.

It was a very full, busy day; this was only a portion of the animals we saw.  I guess we should go more often.

Birthday Ride With the Girl Kid

B-  Hay ya Ranger!  how's my old horse doing?

R-  Fine Beel.

B-  How are you feeling after our birthday ride with my daughter yesterday?

R-  I did not ride Beel.

B-  Well, no. I guess not.  But how are you feeling today, anyway?

R- Fine Beel.  Hungry.

B- Well, we did spend almost 5 hours on the trail yesterday. Lots of different weather conditions and trail conditions.  It started off sunny...
Then it went to rain.

Then it got cool

Then it rained a little again.

R- The trail went up a lot in places Beel. We the horses were glad you the peoples getted off to walk.
R-  Very up.

R-  There were rocks in the trail Beel.
Lots of rocks.

B-  A big storm seemed to be brewing to the north.

B-  At this point we decided to turn right at the next junction to dodge the storm,
and we went to a little mountain lake.

R-  Picnics are good.

B- And the trail leading away from the lake looked kinda cool!

R-  The kid was picnicking all day.  He was bad.  Your girl kid taked the food from him a lot.

R-  The kid finally stopped eating when we got on the black-hard-car-road.  Your girl kid was very happy.  She may be crazy.

R-  We the horses were not scared on the black-hard-car-road.

B-  Maybe not scared of the cars, but the guard-rail sure spooked you.  And when things make you jump, you have to touch them, don't you Ranger.
B-  Except this time you hammered me in the back instead.
B-  You almost knocked me over the rail, you turd!

R-  I tried to touch the scary rail but you standed in the way.

B-  The rest of the ride went fine, though.  Got home just as it started raining HARD.

B-  After we were home for a little while, I heard a commotion across the street at the livery.  One of their horses slammed it's head into the side of the trailer while stepping out, and impaled it's sinuses on a small slotted hook on the wall.  Blood everywhere.  Looks like she is going to be okay, but you never looked up from the feeder, Ranger.  And you flip out every time something goes wrong with those horses, like some of them getting out.  Why didn't the blood bug you any?

R-  I am only unhappy when they break the rules.  There is no rule against blooding.

B-  That's right, I had an old veterinarian tell me once while working on an injured horse that "A horse is born pre-destined to die at a certain time and place, and they spend their whole lives LOOKING FOR IT!"

R-  You are crazy Beel.

It Could Have Been Worse

This is Ranger.  The horse.

At the last some dark times ago many peoples were at the people barn.  I heared some of them say that there was a weeding.  And a man and woman were getting buried.  Every one seemed very happy.  I do not understand.

When all of the peoples left the barn, Beel and Waneeta comed over and sayed we were going on a walk.

"Weddings are tough, Ranger.  We need some time outside now.  Let's check out the trail to Calipso Cascades in the national park."

Beel put the chair on my back and the iron bar in my mouth.  Waneeta put the chair on That Mares back and the iron bar in That Mares mouth.  Then we went for a walk.  When the peoples just sit on our backs and use the head ropes it is only a short walk. When the chairs are on our backs I know we are going for a long long walk.

I like short walks.  I do not like long long walks.  They are hard and it is a long time before you can roll and make the itchies go away.

We started to walk down the rocky-dirt-car-road to go to the the far away trail.  This was not a good thing.  I tried to show Beel how to get home faster by going into the neighbors yards to turn around.  I tried to go into EVERY YARD and he never understanded what I was showing him.

He is not smart.

"You nitwit!  Stop it.  We are going to Calipso Cascades."

After a long enough walk on the dirt-car-road we got to the too long skinny trail.  I telled him-This is the last time to turn around Beel.  But we keeped on going.

Not smart at all.

I gived up.  We were going for a too long walk.

"Man, it's about time you settled down, Ranger!"

I think the trail does not end.

We walked next to a tree that had scratches on the outside.

"Look at that!  A bear climbed that tree and dug it up good!"

He is not there now Beel.  Why are you looking.

We did pass some crazy things on the trail.

We passed some logs stacked under the trail.  Beel sayed they were there so the trail did not fall down the hill.  I did not like that very much.

"Hey Ranger,  we're within a half mile of the Cascades!"

This is not a good thing Beel.  The log is in my way.

Beel taked the chair off of my back so I would be shorter and could walk under the log.

Have I sayed Beel is not smart?

Beel put the chair on my back again and we turned around to go home.

"Jeeze Ranger, I still think you could have gone under it if you had just TRIED"

Going home we went over the stacked logs again.

I runned fast so the trail would not fall down the hill.

We finally stopped for a picnic.

"Wow Ranger, just look at that view!"

Picnic Beel.  I can not eat view.

"Well, Ranger, Juanita made me a peanut butter on tortilla with honey rather than tobasco sauce so I could share with you."

"You get a bite too, Jesse"

We finally gotted home so I could roll and make the itchies go away.

It would have been much faster if Beel had just listened to me.

He is not smart.

Except for the peanut butter and honey thingy.  That was a good idea.
